Found in the San Fernando Valley region of LA, Sherman Oaks is a quiet suburb with all the conveniences of a city and the peacefulness of a small town. The neighborhood was founded in 1927 and has expanded over the years to include parts of nearby Van Nuys.

Sherman Oaks is a family-friendly neighborhood with a good selection of schools and parks. The area covers over nine square miles and includes more than 25,000 homes.

The sprawling neighborhood is south of Van Nuys, west of Studio City, and east of Encino. Ventura Boulevard cuts east/west through the neighborhood. South of the boulevard, the neighborhood extends into the Santa Monica Mountains.

This location is one of the larger neighborhoods in LA county and has earned a reputation as a welcoming place to live. Many young families are moving to the area to take advantage of the school system and convenient access to urban attractions.

Best Attractions and Places to Visit

Sherman Oaks has standard commercial areas with various shops and restaurants. However, the best attractions are found away from the busy streets:

Dixie Canyon Park contains steep trails that take you to multiple overlooks where you can get panoramic views of the surrounding region. The trails are not long, allowing you to hike to an overlook within a few hours.

There are several other large parks in the area, including the Deervale-Stone Canyon Park and the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park. Some of these spots offer everything from basketball courts and tennis courts to playground equipment for the children.

On Tuesdays, visit the Sherman Oaks Farmer’s Market. Purchase fresh local produce, eggs, desserts, and other foods straight from the farm.

If you get tired of walking around outdoors and enjoying nature, take a trip to Westfield Fashion Square Mall. The traditional indoor mall has an assortment of retailers and a large food court.


Public and Private Schools for All Ages

The schools in Sherman Oaks are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. This includes a variety of public, private, and charter schools. One of the highest-rated schools in the area is Dixie Canyon Community Charter School. The K-5 school has about 742 students and a low student/teacher ratio.

Sherman Oaks has one of the lowest population densities compared to surrounding neighborhoods. The lots are often spacious with sprawling backyards containing pools and palm trees.

The median home price is $1.24 million and typically spends about 42 days on market. The prices are often lower along Ventura Boulevard and near some of the other major streets. As you get into the surrounding mountains, the prices tend to increase.
